Influence of Hot Top Height on Macrosegregation and Material Yield in a Large-Size Cast Steel Ingot Using Modeling and Experimental Validation

The effect of the hot top height on formation positive and negative macrosegregation patterns, ingot quality, material yield during solidification a 12 MT cast made Cr-Mo-low alloy steel was investigated. A 3D numerical simulation process conducted using finite element modeling. full-size cut off from its center in longitudinal direction, large cross-section sliced into small samples. chemical mapping all elements composition obtained for samples compared with model predictions validation purposes. influence increase liquid metal velocity field, size shape vortexes, cooling rate liquid, liquidus temperature determined. Results revealed that increasing by 165 mm increased time, fluid regions including bottom, decreased local temperature. combination above resulted an overall decrease more than 6% quality. results are interpreted based interactions between transport solute heat coupled flow driven thermo-solutal convection shrinkage-induced flow.
